World 2024

1. The Olympic Games in Paris
The Summer Olympics in Paris brought not only impressive athletic achievements but also a fresh vision for the Games. For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony was held outdoors. Athletes arrived by boat along the Seine, and the Olympic flame was lit from a balloon above the city. It was a Games that merged sports and culture in an unprecedented way.

2. Climate Disasters and Global Warming
2024 witnessed catastrophic natural events, with widespread wildfires ravaging large areas in Southern Europe and Australia. In early September, the Czech Republic was hit by the worst floods since 1997, followed by devastating downpours and floods in southeastern Spain between October and November, claiming at least 217 lives and causing extensive damage.

3. Loss of Major Figures
This year marked a somber chapter as the world bid farewell to notable icons such as Phil Lesh, Maggie Smith, Toby Keith, and John Amos. Former One Direction member Liam Payne tragically passed after a fall from a hotel window in Buenos Aires, shocking fans and the public alike. Actor Carl Weathers, famous for roles in Predator and Rocky, also passed on February 1 at the age of 76.

4. Political Revolution in the USA
In a year of political shifts, Kamala Harris announced Tim Walz as her running mate in the U.S. presidential race, sparking both domestic and international interest. However, Democrats faced a major defeat in the November elections, with Donald Trump reclaiming the presidency as the 47th U.S. President. Republicans retained control of the House of Representatives and gained a majority in the Senate.

5. Political Changes in the Czech Republic
After the 2023 presidential election, the Czech Republic saw its political landscape stabilize, with President Petr Pavel focusing on strengthening the country's international position, especially within the EU. 2024 also saw an increased emphasis on climate policy and healthcare reform.

6. Success for Czech Cinema and Art
Czech cinema and art achieved global acclaim in 2024. The film Jan Žižka, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, received praise for its artistic quality and historical authenticity. In August, Jiří Mádl’s film Waves made a positive splash, positioning itself as an Oscar contender.

7. The Ongoing War in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, continued into 2024, affecting global politics. Sanctions against Russia and military aid to Ukraine remained focal points in European policy. The war had significant geopolitical and economic impacts, especially in energy resources.

2024 was a milestone year in space exploration. NASA and ESA continued missions to Mars and around the Moon, with the first human expeditions to Mars anticipated for the next decade. The UEFA European Football Championship 2024, held in Germany, brought unexpected results and historic moments. Tennis also saw young athletes stepping up, marking a new era as legends like Nadal and Federer began passing the torch.

2024 showcased the powerful role of social media in shaping political campaigns and public opinion. Many countries, including the Czech Republic, implemented stricter regulations to protect privacy and combat misinformation on online platforms.

The year 2024 was full of innovation and growth. We were delighted to introduce new brands, enriching our portfolio with modern and stylish products. GANT celebrated its 75th anniversary with a fantastic campaign, and our collections shone on prestigious fashion runways. We partnered with the First Lady of the Czech Republic, Eva Pavlová, who showcased our brands at social events, and supported a charity initiative for single parents in collaboration with the Fashion Bank. We successfully expanded our store network in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. Focus on team development ensured exceptional service. We launched an inspiring blog and released the reimagined VIEW magazine, which was a great success. Thank you for being with us on this journey!

On January 28th, retired General Petr Pavel was elected as the President of the Czech Republic.

With the new year, Croatia entered the Schengen Area, meaning that travel for holidays can now proceed without border controls.

We've watched Rihanna's phenomenal performance at the Super Bowl maybe a hundred times.

At the end of the summer holidays, the prestigious tennis tournament, the US Open, took place. The singles winners were the American Cori "Coco" Gauff and the Serbian Novak Djokovic.

The year 2023 marked a significant period in the fight against climate change. International agreements and environmental protection actions gained strength, with countries uniting to support a sustainable future.

Disney celebrated a significant milestone, reaching 100 years on October 16th. The celebrations lasted the entire year, starting with special merchandise, the introduction of new attractions, and thematic refreshments in Disneylands around the world.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings globally and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, several events with a special program took place throughout the year, celebrating the uniqueness of this structure.

The year 2023 was designated as a year of significant advancements in technology. From artificial intelligence to quantum computing, enormous leaps forward were recorded, influencing the way we live and work.

Following the period of the C19 pandemic, some economies began to gradually recover. Stimulus measures and business innovations played a crucial role in the restoration of the global economy.

Nearly two years have passed since the Russian attack on Ukraine, and the end of the war is still not in sight. However, Western states continue to steadfastly support Ukraine and its people.

World 2022

The world is still grappling with COVID. However, we are getting used to it and accepting it as an unpleasant part of our lives.

In February, we were at least somehow distracted by the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, but they were followed by a harsh blow for most of the world, especially Europe.

On February 24th, in the early hours, Russia attacked Ukraine, prompting Ukraine to declare a state of war, and this event became the main theme for the rest of the year.

In the spring, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 70 years on the throne, a record that unfortunately will not be surpassed.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8th at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Ballater, Scotland.

Prince Charles, now King Charles III, ascended to the British throne, and William, now Prince of Wales, assumed the position of Crown Prince.

At the end of October, the world's richest person, Elon Musk, added Twitter to his list of companies alongside brands like Tesla, SpaceX, or The Boring Company. He acquired the popular social network for $44 billion.

The year concluded with the controversy-laden football championship held in Qatar.

In 1922, the world had two billion people. A hundred years later, it's four times more. In November of this year, the human population counter showed over 8 billion people for the first time.

World 2021

Unfortunately, the year 2021 continued to mark the Covid-19 epidemy. However, the vaccinations were successfully applied to majority population as a hope of returning to a normal life full of the freedom and fun we were used to.

On July 2020 finally started Summer Olympics in Tokyo after one year delay. However, the games were held without spectators and under strict restrictions.

The legendary French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo died in September at the age of 88.

In late October Facebook announced renaming to Meta. The name refers to the meta-version, the internet world that the company is building.

Vermont 2021

In 2021 we focused on improving customer service in Vermont, seasonal orders of new collections, launching new brands and opening several new stores.

We also thoroughly prepared the concept of multi-brand VERMONT Stores which were opened at the end of the year in Prague shopping mall Westfield Chodov and in Pilsen's Olympia. Stores are made of first-class materials, a concept from world-class architects with the best customer service. Also, more brands under one roof are more attractive.

World 2020

The year 2020 was overshadowed by a coronavirus pandemy and the main goal this year was the fight against it. Travel bans, closed restaurants, stores and wearing masks have become an everyday part of our lives. The long-awaited Brexit also took place, we witnessed new space flights or exciting presidential elections in the USA.

In 2020 we launched a new multi-brand e-shop VERMONT where you can purchase all currently represented brands from the Vermont portfolio. The GANT brand you can still find on its own online store at eshopgant.hu.

World 2019

2019 was supposed the year Brexit took effect. But that didn’t happen, and ultimately a decision was made at an EU session to postpone for the following year. In the evening of 15 April, the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris began to burn. Firefighters weren’t able to completely extinguish the flames until the next day around noon. This year, we also welcomed another member of the royal family, little Archie, to whom Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan had given birth. And, sadly, just like other years, 2019 was not free of natural disasters, either. One of the most noticeable was the raging of tropical storm Dorian at the end of August and beginning of September in the southeastern United States and adjacent islands.

In 2019, we grew our network of stores with additional locations. Primary credit is due the Camel Active brand, which has expanded across the Czech Republic and Slovakia. We also opened a second Peak Performance store in Slovakia and a KARL LAGERFELD store in Hungary.

Athletes around the world came together once again beneath the five rings in South Korea’s PyeongChang for the winter Olympic Games, Britain’s Prince Harry and his fiancée, Meghan Markle, were married, and the largest-ever project in history to rid the oceans of plastic waste was launched. That too was the year 2018.

According to the Chinese horoscope 2017 will be the year of the Fire Rooster- curious, diligent andaccurate. The Paris Disneyland this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary.And 3300 viewer watched on the spot the blunder at the 2017 Academy Awards whenthe best film winner was named mistakenly.

In March weare going to open the biggest GANT flagship store in Central Europe. The shopping mall Chodov will host also new stores of fashion brands Cremieux, Barbour and La Martina.

We are looking forwardto the new KARL LAGERFELD brand, which will be represented by stores right attwo places in Prague, one being the already mentioned Chodov and the othervenue is Myslbek.

A single hair of John Lennon was auctioned for 35,000 USD. Bob Dylan receives the Nobel prize for literature. The longest commercial flight by Emirates from Dubai to Auckland (17 hours and 15 minutes) was launched.... and Donald Trump was elected the American president.

On the spring equinox we could observe an eclipse of the Sun, when the Moon is located just between the Earth and the Sun. The next full eclipse of the Sun in the Czech Republic will be on 7 October 2135... and by the way, an unbelievable one billion people connected to Facebook this year.

14 February was truly a day of love! On this day a new Guinness world record was made, specifically for the longest hug. On St. Valentine's day, 26 pairs in Thailand broke a record when they hugged for 26 hours, 26 minutes and 26 seconds. Are you feeling up to the challenge? :)

The Mayan calendar predicted the world is going to end in 2012. Luckily, the world is still spinning but this event was an inspiration for a number of movies and TV shows. Felix Baumgarner jumped from the stratosphere. The jump was broadcasted live and made us all dizzy. Fortunately, Felix landed safe and sound.

The biggest event of 2011 was without a doubt the wedding of the British Prince William and Kate Middleton. Over 240 million people watched it on their TVs all over the world. The ceremony took place on 29 April 2011 in the historical Westminster Abbey in London. This day was declared a national holiday in the United Kingdom.

The highest man-made building Burj Khalifa in Dubai is opened. It is an unbelievable 828 meters high. It holds the record for being the highest building in the world and for being the first building where Google Maps allow users to see inside: corridors, public areas inside the buildings and views from different floors are all available.

Invisibility has left the realm of impossible! Scientist from California have discovered an invisibility cloak. They were inspired by Harry Potter and discored a material that is 10x thinner than paper and bends light waves around the covered object, with creates the invisibility effect. It has no practical applications yet, but we hope it will become trendy soom! :)

2005 was the year of flying. The American billionaire Steve Fosset successfully flew around the Earch, alone and without landing or fuelling. He landed his plane on the airport in Kansas, USA, after a 67-hour long flight. The American space shuttle Discovery also landed successfully in California.
